Mozambican province of Nampula exceeds expected cashew production

Nampula, Mozambique, 3 June – Mozambique’s Nampula province, in the north of the country and the country’s largest producer of cashew nuts, has exceeded its target production for cashews in the 2010/11 season by selling over 49,000 tons as compared to projections of 47,000 tons, provincial governor Felismino Tocoli said.

According to Mozambican daily newspaper Notícias, the governor said that in order to ensure that the nuts were processed in the country inspectors had been hired in order to prevent unprocessed cashews being exported and guarantee supplies to the local processing industry.

“Technical staff from the National Cashew Institute (Incaju) have been placed at local posts to inspect the cashews for export and issue certificates to exporters that have previously provided local industry with raw materials,” the governor said, adding that there were currently enough cashews for the national industry to be able to operate.

In 2010, the governor said, 302,000 cashew saplings were distributed to families, associations, the private sector and schools, signed up for the “Lets Plant More Cashew Trees,” programme and 637,000 grafted cashew saplings were produced.
