Sofala province, Mozambique to export 4,000 tons of cashew nuts to India

Maputo, Mozambique, 15 Feb – The province of Sofala, in the centre of Mozambique, is to export 4,000 tons of cashew nuts this year to India, a source from the National Cashew Institute (Incaju) told Macauhub in Maputo.
This year Sofala province is expected to produce 5,500 tons of cashew nuts.
According to the source, revenues from the production and sale of the cashews in Sofala are expected to reach 120 million meticals as compared to 40 million meticals in the previous season.
The source said that “good production” had been due to “good climate conditions,” as well as dusting of cashew trees and good flowering, amongst other reasons.
This year, 4.5 million cashew trees are due to be dusted across the country in order to make them more productive.
In Nampula province 2.2 million trees will be treated, followed by Cabo Delgado province with 1.5 million cashew trees and Zambézia with 200,000.
Cashew trees will also be treated in the provinces of Manica, Gaza, Maputo and Sofala.
In this agricultural year Mozambique expects to produce 95,000 tons of cashew nuts.
