Cashew nuts sold at over 1 dollar per kilo in Mozambique

Maputo, Mozambique, 24 Feb – Cashew nut producers in the district of Gilé, in the north of the Mozambican province of Zambézia, are selling cashew nuts at 35 meticals per kilo, which is much higher than the benchmark price of 6 meticals per kilo set by the Mozambican government, said the district’s administrator.
Cited by newspaper, Diário de Moçambique, Teresa Mauaie also said that the population was enthusiastic about increasing cashew nut productivity levels, which was evident from the acquisition of saplings.
The district of Gilé is focused on further increasing its cashew crop and for the purpose, is already in the execution phase of a plan to produce 50,000 saplings, of which 35,900 have so far been produced and distributed to large producers.
Mauaie said that, in 2009, production of this cash crop totalled 779 tones, with the price averaging some 12 meticals in the period of greatest demand.
Zambézia province has great potential for cashew nut production in the districts of Gilé, Namacurra, Pebane and Nicoadala.
A dollar is worth around 31.5 meticals.
