Mozambique to treat 4.5 million cashew nut trees this year

MAPUTO (Commodity Online) : Around 4.5 million cashew trees will be treated across Mozambique this year, in order to make them more productive, according to national cashew institute (INCAJU).
In Nampula province, which is the country’s biggest producer of cashews, 2.2 million trees will be treated, followed by Cabo Delgado province, where 1.5 million will undergo treatment, and Zambézia with 200,000. Cashew  trees will also be treated in the provinces of Manica, Gaza, Maputo and Sofala.
This season Mozambique expects to produce 95,000 tons of cashew nuts, which is a drop of 1,550 tons on the previous season.
Until the 1960s, Mozambique produced half of the world’s cashew nuts with production reaching a peak near to the country’s independence, with around 200,000 tonnes per year.
In 1972 production reached its highest level with the sale of 216,000 tons, which then made Mozambique the world’s largest exporter.
