Sifa Bernardo António said that activities with a view to replanting those areas with the cash crop were being carried out alongside identification and increasing the number of cashew trees in districts with less tradition of cashew production.

“At the moment we are boosting production of saplings with a view to recovering the potential that the province had, although rates are rising every year,” he said according to Mozambican daily newspaper Notícias.

The provincial delegate for the Cashew Institute said that, as well as five fields to produce saplings, the province was also working on identifying more regions with potential to plant cashews as a way of increasing their numbers.

The regions with potential include the city of Beira and the districts of Muanza, Cheringoma, Caia and Machanga.
